It's a jolly holiday with ..... Hot water?

The first days in England don’t actually seem that much different than being on vacation. A camping vacation. A camping vacation, where you have a glorious house deep in a forest that is lacking all modern conveniences except gas for the stove, firewood for a fire, a telephone line for emergencies and electricity for the lights (provided not too many are left on at once, because then a fuse will be blown).

Let me explain….

We have been renting this house since June 1st. That’s right. June 1st. I know we just moved in August 5th, but you would think, at some point BEFORE a family of five arrived, someone, somewhere, might ascertain whether there was a source of hot water on this property. Of course, if you thought this, you would be wrong.

I have not had a hot shower since the 15th of August.

I am not happy about this.

And, I still don't have internet at home. ARGH!!

But, I am currently more upset that we don't have hot water. Double ARGH!!!!!! It is a misery. I am washing my hair in the sink and layering up the Secret. I am going to resort to perfume (or washcloth baths soon). :( Aside from the absence of those basic comforts of the civilized world, we are doing well and the boys are loving the huge back yard. We have no electronic devices or contact with the outside world while at home, so the boys are running like boys should. They are doing surprisingly well and didn't even ask about getting to recharge their Nintendo DS's yesterday!

I am going start making bread soon, and cookies, and all other manner of baked yummies. The oven truly is a revelation. Unbelieavable. Convection ovens on one side, gas on the other. I baked chickens the other night and carbonara for our first dinner at home. Wonderful!

We've been reveling in croissants with strawberry jam and hot cocoa for breakfast every day. Daddy-007 has been building a fire in the fireplace every morning to ward off the chill, so we gather round with our coffees and cocoas and ..... talk? I had no idea that my boys could be so chatty. ;)

The kids think that jolly old England is the best thing ever.

I swear I will have photos to upload soon. I am at the library today using the internet for 45 minutes before I have to run to a preschool interview for the Animal, then back to town, then to Southampton (or Soton, as it is called for short) to buy the car that we found, Ikea for a dresser, and the electronics store to get step-down converters so we can use the electronic things we brought with us. Phew! xoxoxoxooxoxox

  1. You sound truly European doucing your stinky self in perfume! Other than that, it all sounds wonderful-- I would love to do what you are doing!!

  4. Oh but the morning fire to ward off the chill sounds so Austen-like!

  5. Ah yes, the English chill. When I lived in London my Mum asked me what I needed sent over at Christmas and I said "all my flannel nighties" This Canadian girl had never been so cold as the winter I survived the lack of central heating in a flat in Wandsworth. So glad you are all having fun.

  7. When I moved into my house in Maryland we didn't have cable tv for two months. It was WONDERFUL. We ate together, TALKED with each other.

    Then the cable came on.

  8. yeah, the hot water thing would grate on my nerves, too.

can't wait for more details and photos.

  9. You have to light a fire to ward off the chill and we have 90+ degrees every day.

I hope you get hot water soon!! And internet!

  10. It sounds awesome. And you're going to love the people over there. Brits can be a bit reserved but they are very sweet and caring about others. And once the kids get to school they will become instant celebrities for being American.

  11. Well I hope someone there can get your hot water situation fixed soon...but I have to admit the thought of no electronic devices does sound a little nice....

  12. I have heated up enough water on a stove to take a passable bath. If you have a tub.

  13. Ohhh, so good to hear things are going well. And um, we call the washcloth bath a whore bath in these parts. P, T, & A. Ew, right? But it's so the right word.

Amazing to be just 'BEing' w/ the kids - and unplugging. Will they start school there soon?

Here's to a warm shower in your near future!

  15. hahahahhahahaha! Amy dahhhling....didn't you know that the English would rather die than lower themselves to the status of the lower in society by using any form of indoor heating???? And I thought someone moving to another country would have done SOME homework!!!!

  16. I am so happy for you? I mean major utilites and conviences aside...I am happy you are all there and you seem 'comfortable'. Everyday will be better as you settle in more....

I have decided when you guys are done with this 'adventure'/career change thing you shall move back to California (say Newport?) and build yachts and live happily ever after. And we can sit around and drink coffee and laugh about those crazy 'brit' years!

    Okay?

  17. Sorry about the lack of hot water and internet. Reminds me of our first several weeks here. We were without electricity and our landlord could give a crap. It can only get better!

  20. Hahaha... I think no hot water when you move abroad must be a right of passage. Happened to us too. Maybe the idea is that if things start out really shitty, it all smells like roses from there (ba dum dum).

I too was kicking myself for packing so much of the punks' stuff when we moved over... after seeing how content they were with nothing for the six weeks we had to wait for the crate to arrive.

    Keep it simple and ENJOY...

  22. It's like you're all characters in one of those novels for kids set in England, with boys running around the back garden (I lived in England, I know some of the jargon ;-) and adventures in the hedgerows, etc.

I live for hot showers. I'm so sorry about that little hitch.

  23. Sounds like quite the adventure. Hope you get hot water soon, that would seriously suck.

    Love the Union Jack background.

  26. Make it work Amy !! You are going to look back and think of these moments as the Best of Times...Heat your water on that fab new stove! We are making some radical changes here as well , I am finally unplugging the T,V. and computer. Your boys are beautiful :-)
*Y* Xp You guys are inspirational ........

  27. So sorry you have no hot water or internet! But, you're in the UK!! Yeah! Sounds like you are settling in nicely.

  28. It sounds wonderful; Amy I'm so happy for you. I hope you're not lonely. Call me :)) xoxoxo

  29. I think you'll have to go native and start taking baths (you can use a kettle of hot water to warm up the tub). But seriously - it sounds pretty wonderful (and fattening - carbonara is my favorite artery clogging food).

  30. Er.. WHY is there no hot water? Sounds very unusual indeed!

Apart from that, whenever I go back home to England, it's always like camping. Still can't get over the fact that you can't shower and flush the toilet at the same time!

  31. It sounds like you are having a very fun time! There is nothing not to love about crossaints and jam : ) Delightful : )

  32. Wow! When can you expect the hot water to come? Cuz I might be looking for a new house I were in your shoes.

  33. I would DIE without hot water. However. I'm still jealous of your adventures in England. :)

  34. Awww you're making me a little home sick! I'm glad that you've finally made it there, sorry 'bout the hot water, but I'm sure you'll get it fixed. Can't wait to see pics!!!
