I don't get it. I've got more "de-scaling" and "lime-away" type cleaning products than I ever thought possible. Don't they realize that a softener would make cleaning soooo much easier? I'm going to have to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it is a space issue, rather than a enjoys-cleaning-lime-scale genetic propensity.
It has been a minor obsession.
I get out of the shower and my hair feels like a pile of hay, despite massive conditioning treatments. I put on some spray-in conditioner and then my Aveda Be Curly lotion with a little Brilliance mixed in... my usual routine... and then my hair is just meh. It feels heavy, hasn't been as curly, and has been feeling filthy really quickly, requiring me to wash it every other day, which is more often than I used to have to. (Stop your grumbling, you people with fine hair! We all have our crosses to bear. It's my hair and I'll whine if I want to.)
I've had a couple good hair days since getting here and they both occurred when I showered at the gym or a hotel, so I assumed it had something to do with their water being softer.
I'm getting round to the point now, so bear with me just a little longer.
Yesterday, I was making preparations for the gym and was very excited to wash my hair while there, but was out of conditioner so started rummaging around in my drawers for the Aveda conditioner that I remembered buying before I left the States. After pawing around awhile, I found a tube of my curl enhancing lotion, but no conditioner.
And then I started thinking, that's weird, why do have an extra tube of that?
And then I looked at the countertop round-up of hair and face creams....
And then I realized that I had been putting conditioner in my hair, instead of my curling lotion, for the past two months.

This lotion is the best thing I have ever found for my curly, thick hair. I love it.
BUT. (and it's a big but)
I have to file a formal complaint that these two containers look so much alike. Aveda?? Are you listening??
(And, yes, I feel like a total ass. Because I really have been whining about it to almost everyone I know. For two months.)
It's funny, my thick, curly hair doesn't do well with Aveda products. I use Bumble & Bumble curl stuff, and I always start out with a bit of the conditioner. For real. :)
ReplyDeleteBah. Ha. I blame it on old eyes. ;) On the up side, maybe problem solved?
ReplyDeleteLaughing with you not at you! Post a picture of you now perfect curly English hair!!
ReplyDeletetry rinsing your hair with vinegar. strips the minerals out. down side: you might smell like a pickle. up side: your hair will be softer.
ReplyDeleteno really, mix 1:1 vinegar and water and add some scented essential oil...whatever scent you like. try it...
Ahhh I love Aveda :) But it should be illegal for those two containers to look so similar!
ReplyDeletelol....I love this....I've done similar things myself....but the best was my husband mistaking my hair lotion for face cream......not good!
ReplyDeleteDamn, is THAT why I still have zits at 37? Have I accidentally been putting bacon grease on my face instead of salicylic acid? Fuck!!
ReplyDeleteYou're gorgeous, lady, with the conditioner of without.
Congrats on getting to the gym anyway, whatever the hair situation!
ReplyDeleteWrite them a letter, maybe you'll get some freebies. Because who CAN'T use more aveda?!?
ReplyDeleteAll I know is that you are good looking!
ReplyDeleteI can relate to this. I complained for a year about a hair drier with a really short cord.
ReplyDeleteI didn't notice it when I first bought it and attributed that to the fact that I had just given birth to twins and barely ever washed my hair let alone dried it. But once my schedule became a bit more manageable (and I had to go back to work - which calls for professional looking hair), I had more quality time with the hair drier and began to see how ill matched we were.
I could barely reach the top of my head (and I'm only 5'6"). This went on with a lot of grumbling and very little effort to buy a new one for quite some time until one day I found that I couldn't raise the damn thing over my ear. I stared at it in open mouthed incredulity until I had the revelation that any normal person would have experienced MONTHS prior. I reached down and tugged on the cord. It was retractable. And been slowly retracting for a year. So yeah - I get this.
Well, we have a water softener! No advice on getting your products switched around. :)
ReplyDeletelol...I would totally do something like that...
ReplyDeleteAaaaaHA! Mystery solved!
ReplyDeleteIf it makes you feel any better, I use those same products and I've done the exact same thing a million times. (I mean, not usually for two months in a row, but.... *ducks*)
You know what else I hate about that bottle? It's not refillable from those gigantic Aveda things. Now tell me, how is a non-refillable conditioner bottle good for the environment, AVEDA?
Please add that to your formal complaint. I'm too lazy to draft my own.
xo
Oh dear! That is totally something I would do! Are you blind too? *chuckle*
ReplyDeleteSo, how is your hair looking now?
Very funny.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, we have no water softner and I like my hair BETTER with hard water. But our dishes look like shit, and our pipes are probably going to need a quadruple bypass.
For the record, you said "getting round" you cute little Brit.
xo
and you look way too pretty in that second photo for it to be a genuine "hair don't"
ReplyDeleteWow has it really been that long since I've stopped by and commented on your blog? Holy monkey balls! Did you really move over seas??????? wow i'm totally out of the loop! lol Glad to know that you finally have your hair stuff in order tho! lol
ReplyDeleteI think you need to just send me your Aveda products so you're not confused any more......
ReplyDelete:)))
Aveda products are some of the best naturally based out there. I am currently using the deep penetrating hair revitalizer because I recently went plat blonde from red...yes, it gets crunchy if I don't drown it in moisture.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter lived in England for a couple of years while she was in the Navy. She never had good hair days either. Hey, but you have a great home and really cool natural beauty all around you! You can't have everything!
I think your hair looks lovely, but yeah come on Aveda put a zip of color on one of the tubes. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat second picture of you? That's what my new hair cut looks like and my hair is as straight as a board. IT'S NOT FUNNY.
ReplyDeleteThey look identical. You poor thing! I got picked up once for some mommy blog radio show thing for a post about how Oil of Olay made the night cream I was using with a white label and the day cream with a black label. (Identical jars.)
ReplyDeleteComplete clusterfook. In the morning, and again at night, I'M TOO TIRED for that shit!
That's hilarious. And yes, they look exactly alike. WTF?!
ReplyDeleteGeez, that is something I would do, and I have done; something about being blind not only when I'm in the shower anymore (fine print, dammit!)
ReplyDeleteGood to see your smiling face, even if those are apparently "bad hair" shots.
Hey Hon, Stop by and pick up your award when you have time!
ReplyDeleteI've always knew you were fun, Amy, but now I realize just how much.
ReplyDeleteOh, and you are definitely not alone with this realization. However, I think I can do you one better...
Ever try the K-Y as hair gel? A "friend" of mine did. We wouldn't recommend it.
Wow. That really IS a big but.
ReplyDeletei know this comment is tres late....BUT i had to come back and say thanks for the tip on the aveda curl lotion. im always on the hunt to find stuff to tame my do and tried it this week.
ReplyDeletethe hair is now awesome......just thought i should say thanks!
Just found this post... And it reminds Bossy of the time that famous actor nearly lost his twins to that awful debacle with the medications that weren't clearly marked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, because, REALLY, this is almost as bad.
