Judy Blume is here in Madison!

I am planning on seeing Judy Blume tonight at the university, so I thought I might take a little stroll down memory lane.... Remember reading Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret.? I just had the pleasure of re-reading it and was dropped right back in fifth/sixth grade when you are starting to eye the boys, but aren't quite sure yet what "going with" somebody entails. I remember being so jealous of a friend of mine who was going with this boy named Devlin Denbow (how he is not findable on the internet with a name like that is incredible-where is he!?). He would walk, hand in hand, with her to the bus after school and sometimes give her a kiss on the cheek. "How romantic!", I would think. And then would go back to reading Little Women and dreaming of meeting my own "Teddy" someday.

Well, I've got my own Teddy now, unfortunately he is in the form of my 9 year old son, but he is still pretty awesome and cuddly. I'll check back in tomorrow to report on Judy Blume's talk. I'm sure she will address the fact that her books have been banned time after time and hopefully she'll speak on how that reflects on our society. I think it is amazing that even in this day and age, parents might find her work too risqué for readers. Not that I want my 15 year old daughter reading Forever, but on the other hand, I hope that my kids will put as much thought into losing their virginity as that character did!
